Although it’s been less than a month since 2016 started, that’s not stopping movie studios from looking ahead into the future. Disney, which has a busy schedule next year in 2017, has changed some of its movies’ release dates…
Star Wars: Episode VIII
The eighth chapter in the Skywalker saga was originally scheduled to be released on May 26, 2017, returning ‘Star Wars’ to its traditional release month of May. However, after the massive success of ‘Episode VII’ being released in December (along with rumors of a possible production delay), the new release date will now be December 15, 2017. While it is a bit disappointing that ‘Star Wars’ won’t be returning to the month of May like the first six saga films, I’m actually okay with this change. Call me old-fashioned, but while it’s great that we’ll be getting a ‘Star Wars’ movie every year, I rather miss how it used to be in the old days when there would be a 3 year wait for the next movie in a ‘Star Wars’ trilogy. Sure, this is actually 2 instead of 3 years, but it’s close enough.
POTC: Dead Men Tell No Tales
The fifth entry in the highly successful ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ series was originally scheduled to be released on July 7, 2017, the same month as the first two ‘Pirates’ movies. However, ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales’ has been moved up to the release date previously reserved by ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’, May 26, 2017, making May the sort of “new traditional” release month for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies. Considering the film has already finished filming, 15 more months of post-production seems more than enough time to polish the film.
MCU Spider-Man Movie
Okay, so this was a Sony decision rather than Disney, but Disney-owned Marvel Studios is co-producing this movie, so it still sorta counts. Anyway, originally scheduled for July 28, 2017, the MCU Spider-Man movie will now be released on the date previously held by ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’, July 7, 2017. While I definitely would’ve still seen the movie had it come out on July 28, I still feel the earlier in July the release, the better, despite ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ proving that a movie released late in the summer season can still be a big box office hit.
